Michael is recognized as a national expert in influencing physician practice patterns at scale. He has developed methods for reducing unwarranted clinical variation through unblinded peer comparisons, facilitated group discussion, mobile phone messages, national claims profiles, and simulated patients.

He has served as senior physician executive at Agathos, Embold Health, and QURE Healthcare. Prior roles include Chief Medical Officer at Bay Area Hospital and VP of Variation Reduction at Sutter Health, where his method of pinpointing care variation and facilitating helpful, actionable feedback won physicians’ trust and generated millions in savings. He has worked with several health plans and currently serves as medical director for Medicare/Medicaid & Health Equity for Providence Health Plan.
