Members of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) were instrumental in creating tools and guides for physicians across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. EvidenceCare’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brian Fengler, co-led the development of ACEP’s COVID-19 ED Management Tool.
This tool, originally called the COVID-19 Severity Classification Tool, helps emergency physicians better determine a patient’s disease severity and prognostic risks for mortality or end-organ failure. It walks physicians through 7 steps to manage their patients:
- Severity Classification
- Risk Prognostication
- Risk Assessment
- Diagnostic Testing
- Diagnostic Interpretation
“We are so excited to be able to offer this tool to the emergency medicine community,” said Dr. Fengler. “We finally have enough data to make evidence-based recommendations on the best-practice approach to managing these patients in the emergency department.”
The Field Guide (awarded at the ASAE Summit) is a compilation of over 100 physician contributors on the evaluation and treatment of COVID-19. It’s a detailed but accessible document that is updated as new information, guidance, and best practices evolve.
“I saw my friends and colleagues doing their duty going into the hospitals… and I was just honored to be involved, because I felt like it was a way that I could be contributing to the emergency medicine community,” said Dr. Fengler.
