Members of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) were instrumental in creating tools and guides for physicians across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. EvidenceCare’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brian Fengler, co-led the development of ACEP’s COVID-19 ED Management Tool

This tool, originally called the COVID-19 Severity Classification Tool, helps emergency physicians better determine a patient’s disease severity and prognostic risks for mortality or end-organ failure. It walks physicians through 7 steps to manage their patients:

  1. Severity Classification
  2. Risk Prognostication
  3. Risk Assessment
  4. Diagnostic Testing
  5. Diagnostic Interpretation
  6. Disposition
  7. Treatment

“We are so excited to be able to offer this tool to the emergency medicine community,” said Dr. Fengler. “We finally have enough data to make evidence-based recommendations on the best-practice approach to managing these patients in the emergency department.”

Dr. Fengler was also featured in a video describing the community of ACEP members who collaborated to create the award-winning COVID-19 Field Guide

The Field Guide (awarded at the ASAE Summit) is a compilation of over 100 physician contributors on the evaluation and treatment of COVID-19. It’s a detailed but accessible document that is updated as new information, guidance, and best practices evolve.

“I saw my friends and colleagues doing their duty going into the hospitals… and I was just honored to be involved, because I felt like it was a way that I could be contributing to the emergency medicine community,” said Dr. Fengler.
